Version 1.0, 6-30-2006 This super-module implements a dynamically-adjusting stereo loudness EQ. For high-level input signals, it has a flat frequency response. As the input signal level drops, bass and treble are increasingly boosted and the mid-range is increasingly cut. The signal level is sensed by summing the left and right inputs. The same EQ curve is applied to both inputs in parallel. Inputs: There are 2 inputs for the left and right audio channels. Outputs: There are 2 outputs for the left and right audio channels. This super-module includes a Control Screen for operating it (right click the super-module and choose View Control Screen to access). The following controls are included: Input Gain and Mute: A single fader controls the gain of both channels in tandem. This can be used to ensure proper signal level at the input. Pre EQ meters: These meters show the peak signal level of both channels before the EQ (but after the input gain). Post EQ meters: These meters show the peak signal level of both channels after the EQ, i.e. at the module output. EQ graph: The graph displays the current EQ curve the module is applying. It updates in real-time. Rumble filter controls The Rumble filter is an optional 18 dB/octave low-cut filter that can be used to roll-off very low frequencies. A bypass control is provided as well as a frequency slider to adjust the cut-off point. Filter controls: For each of the 3 bands of equalization (low, mid, and high), various controls are offered to fine-tune the response. The gains of each filter are controlled by the level-sensing control logic and hence are not user adjustable. They are displayed for diagnostic purposes and if they are adjusted, they will snap back to their previous position after a few seconds. However, frequency, width (mid-band only), and bypass are fully user-adjustable. EQ Logic controls: For each of the 3 bands of equalization, the maximum boost or cut can be adjusted. This is the boost/cut applied for very low level signals. The percentage units displayed are somewhat arbitrary, so the easiest way to adjust this parameter is to mute the inputs and adjust while reading the gain for each band off the graph or Gain text display. Moving the fader all the way to left results in no boost/cut (0d dB), while moving it all the way right results in the maximum (most aggressive) boost/cut (15 dB). The default settings are as follows: low = 75% = 7.5 dB boost, mid = 30% = 6 dB cut, and high = 70% = 6 dB boost. Filter Bypass: This bypasses the loudness EQ and Rumble filter. Sense Response controls The response speed may be adjusted to determine how fast the gain changes in response to changing input signal levels. Slower responses provide more filtering and less "wandering" for typical music signals. The response characteristic can be changed from RMS to Peak. The Audio Level meter provides a indication of the current sensed input signal level and is affected by the speed and peak/RMS setting. Note on levels: The module is set-up to generate a flat response for input signals of about -15 dBFS peak or above. From there, the equalization effect increases linearly until it reaches the maximum at about -45 dBFS peak. It is intended to allow using external momentary buttons to smoothly control a volume (or other parameter). For example, the user would be presented with simple up and down push buttons which could be used to adjust a system volume. There are 2 different versions of this super-module, each a different variation on the same basic idea: 1) Continuous: The volume is ramped continuously as long as the button is held down. 2) Stepped: A single button push generates a fixed change. If the button is held, after a brief delay, the volume is ramped in discrete steps at a regular rate. Choose whichever version is appropriate for your application. This version is the Continuous model. As long as the button is held down, the volume smoothly increases or decreases. Very short pushes have very little effect on the volume. If both buttons are pushed at the same time, no changes occur. The volume changes are linear in dB, i.e. every step is the same size when measured in dB. If both buttons are pressed simultaneously, no changes occur. After download, the volume will be at its minimum value. This super-module includes a Control Screen for operating it (right click the super-module and choose View Control Screen to access). The following controls and displays are included: Current Output: Displays the current output of the super-module in percentage from 0-100%. The Up and Down LEDs light when their respective input are active. Ramp Speed fader: Controls the speed at which the volume ramp changes as the buttons are held down. Volume Range fader: Sets the range of the volume control, essentially how low it will go before either muting or stopping. If Allow Mute is selected, the volume will go all the way down to 0% or off. If it is not selected, the volume will stop at a level of minus the volume range. For example, with a 40dB volume range and Allow Mute off, the volume control will go from -40 dB to 0 dB. Technical note: The need for this control is because of the mathematical properties of exponential functions. When moving linearly in dB, you can never truly reach zero unless you limit the range. It is intended to allow using external momentary buttons to smoothly control a volume (or other parameter). For example, the user would be presented with simple up and down push buttons which could be used to adjust a system volume. There are 2 different versions of this super-module, each a different variation on the same basic idea: 1) Continuous: The volume is ramped continuously as long as the button is held down. 2) Stepped: A single button push generates a fixed change. If the button is held, after a brief delay, the volume is ramped in discrete steps at a regular rate. Choose whichever version is appropriate for your application. This version is #2, the Stepped model. Each time the button a pressed, the volume changes by a discrete step. If the button is held down, after a programmable 'repeat delay', the volume steps at a regular 'repeat rate'. This is similar to how the up/down volume buttons on most television remotes work. The Up and Down LEDs light when their respective input are active. Step Size fader: Controls the size of the volume step. Higher values correspond to large steps. The actual size of the step is dB is dependent on the Volume Range (discussd below). But with the default volume range of 40 dB, the step size ranges from about 1 dB to 27 dB. Repeat Delay fader: Controls the amount of time the button must be held down before it starts repeating. Higher values correspond to longer delays. This parameter ranges from about 100 ms to 1.5 seconds. Repeat Rate fader: Controls the repeat rate of the steps when the button is held down. Higher values correspond to faster changes. This parameter ranges from about 5 ms to 1 second. Volume Range fader: Sets the range of the volume control, essentially how low it will go before either muting or stopping. If Allow Mute is selected, the volume will go all the way down to 0% or off. If it is not selected, the volume will stop at a level of minus the volume range.
